Revised Project Plans
Since its inception in 1981, Battlers Well Foundation (BWF) has provided a range of services for the community. BWF now aspires to redevelop The Salaam Centre. The plans are designed to provide high quality facilities for people of all ages in Harrow. The scheme responds to several rounds of public consultation and lengthy discussions with the Council and the Environment.
The Salaam Centre will be open to people of all ethnic and religious backgrounds and thus will widen the scope of the charity to benefit a greater proportion of the local inhabitants of Harrow. The aim of the project is to bring the whole community together, whether it is creating harmonious, interactive and vibrant youth who would develop into committed citizens, or providing services for young and old throughout Harrow.
Facilities- Sports Hall with four badminton courts
- Gyms (male & female)
- Children's play centre
- Prayer area
- Library
- Cafe
- Seminar rooms
- Courtyard, Public Square and three further gardens
- A small beauty salon
- A dining area and management suite
- 30 parking spaces
The scheme will explore subtle relationships and social juxtapositions between functions and user groups. The aim will be to create open fluid spaces where areas blur and where one activity merges into another. Both young and old will be able to interact in a harmonious environment.
One of the core aims of the project will be to invite and encourage dialogue between Muslims and the wider non-Muslim community. The Salaam Centre scheme, as an inclusive project, will create dialogue through the use of spaces open to the public such as cafes, exhibition spaces, courtyards and gardens.
The DesignThe Salaam Centre will help regenerate this area of Harrow by providing a unique and modern building. The architecture is based on traditional structures with a modern twist. Using modern materials, we want it to represent the ethnic and religious diversity present in North Harrow, and enable people to celebrate and explore other cultures through the Centre.

Integral to the proposals is environmental sustainability and a focus on eco design to minimise the impact on the environment. The development shall be designed to BREEAM standards with an aspiration to achieve a rating of at least Very Good. The Foundation will maximise opportunities to apply modern energy generating methods such as photo voltaics and solar hot water panels. The plans for green and brown roofs and rainwater harvesting will also help to improve the sustainability of the building. Bin stores have been designed to take recycling into consideration. Furthermore, many shrubs and trees are included in the landscaping.
BWF is optimistic that this innovative and ambitious scheme will benefit the residents of Harrow, and become an important landmark in London.
